Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 bring a new decision for teams evaluating AI assistants: which access model fits the work? This guide separates the announcement facts from our advice on evaluating the release.

Fable 5.1 vs Mythos 5.1: What Changed?

Anthropic says both share one underlying model. Fable is generally available; Mythos has tailored safeguards for vetted cybersecurity and life-sciences users, initially selected US organizations. Mythos also powers Claude Security. Research examples include Venus mapping and faster scientific computing.

Coding and Research Performance

Anthropic reports Fable 5.1 scores of 52.6% on Terminal-Bench-Science and 73.4% on CursorBench. These are vendor evaluations, not our independent tests; safeguards and evaluation setups affect comparisons.

Fable 5.1 API Pricing

Published prices per million tokens: $10 input, $50 output, and $0.25 cache reads. Anthropic estimates typical token-billed workloads cost 25% less than Fable 5, with savings up to about 45% for highly agentic work. The API identifier is claude-fable-5-1.

Budget using your actual mix of new input, repeated context, and output. A lower cache-read rate should not be treated as an equivalent discount on every request or a promise about subscription fees.

Safeguards and Access

Fable permits vulnerability discovery with restrictions on exploit work. Anthropic reports fewer benign-request interventions. Mythos access requires vetting; it is not an unrestricted public chatbot. See the official release announcement for availability and qualifications.

Enterprise Frontier Safeguards Explained

In its separate EFS announcement, Anthropic describes optional customer-controlled storage, encryption keys, and automated review. Monitoring flags go to the customer’s own reviewers. Rollout starts in phases later in fall 2026; eligible customers receive zero data retention on Fable 5 and 5.1 in the interim. Anthropic does not charge for EFS, but cloud storage and related usage can incur provider charges. These controls do not change API pricing, rate limits, or model behavior. How We Would Evaluate the Upgrade

Our recommendation is to run a small comparison on tasks your team already understands. For coding, use a resolved bug with regression tests. For knowledge work, use a document with known answers and check citations. Record total cost, completion time, reviewer corrections, and whether the result actually passes your acceptance criteria.

Keep prompts, tools, and success criteria consistent across runs. One impressive demonstration is useful for exploration, but repeated success on representative work is a better basis for adoption. Start with a limited trial and expand after the results justify it.
