The honest finding from this year’s check: the dedicated AI writing tools have largely stopped competing for bloggers. Jasper’s entry plan is $59 a seat. Copy.ai has stopped publishing anything above its $29 chat plan at all — the next step is a sales call. Writesonic now starts at $79 and is barely a writing tool any more. Meanwhile a general assistant at $17–20 does the drafting job most bloggers actually need.

The short answer

Most bloggers: ChatGPT Plus at $20 or Claude Pro at $17. You are buying a writing assistant either way, and neither charges you per word.

Tightest budget: Rytr at $7.50 a month, or its free 10,000 characters.

A brand voice several writers must follow: Jasper, at $59 a seat annually. That is what you are paying the premium for.

Not for bloggers any more: Copy.ai above the chat tier, and Writesonic. Both are now priced and built for marketing teams.

What changed, and why it matters

The category moved upmarket. Two years ago this list was full of $19 and $29 tools aimed at individual writers. Today Jasper, Copy.ai and Writesonic are all selling to marketing teams, and their pricing reflects it. That is not a criticism — it is just a different buyer, and if you are one person with a blog, you are no longer it.

General assistants closed the gap. The specific advantage a writing tool used to have was templates and tone control. A $20 assistant with a saved set of instructions now does most of that, without metering your words.

What you still cannot get cheaply is enforced consistency across several writers. Jasper’s Brand Voices exist because a five-person content team needs everyone to sound the same. If that is your problem, $59 a seat is a reasonable price for solving it. If it is not, you are paying for governance you do not need.

The bottom line

If you write your own blog, do not buy an AI writing tool this year. Put $17–$20 into a general assistant, spend an hour writing a good set of standing instructions about your voice and your audience, and keep the difference. Revisit the dedicated tools when you have other writers to keep consistent — that is the problem they are now built to solve, and the only one that justifies the price.
