ChatGPT Pricing in October 2026: the New $500 Pro Tier, the Pro 200 Reset and Every Published Limit

OpenAI spent the last two weeks of September rearranging the top of its price list. On 29 September 2026, at DevDay, it launched a $500/month Pro tier and simultaneously reopened the $200 tier “with adjusted included usage allowances” — which is a careful way of saying the $200 plan now gets less than it used to.
That, plus a feature wave and three retirement deadlines you need on a calendar, is what changed. Here is all of it, with the numbers.
ChatGPT pricing in October 2026

| Plan | Price | Billing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | — | Ads may appear. Up to 3 active scheduled tasks, 500 MB file storage. |
| Go | $8 / month (US) | Monthly, cancel anytime | 10× the free tier’s messages, uploads and image creation. Ads may appear. 4 GB storage. |
| Plus | $20 / month | Billed monthly | No ads. 20 GB storage. No GPT-6 Pro in Chat. |
| Pro 100 | $100 / month | Monthly only | 50 GPT-6 Pro messages/week (shared). 100 GB storage. |
| Pro 200 | $200 / month | Monthly only | 200 GPT-6 Pro messages/week. Reopened 29 Sept with reduced allowances. |
| Pro 500 | $500 / month | Monthly only | New on 29 Sept 2026. The only tier with GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast. |
| Business Standard | $25 / user / month, or $20 billed annually | Min. 2 seats | 15 GPT-6 Pro messages/month, shared. |
| Business Premium | $125 / user / month, or $100 billed annually | Min. 2 seats | 50 GPT-6 Pro messages/week, shared. Gets dots. |
| Enterprise / Edu | Contact sales | — | No public figure published. |
OpenAI states plainly that “Pro is billed monthly. Annual billing and payment for multiple months in advance are not available.” Only Business offers an annual discount. Note that chatgpt.com/pricing renders its figures in the browser rather than the page source, so the numbers above come from OpenAI’s help-centre articles and the ChatGPT Go launch post rather than the pricing table.
The $8 tier most people do not know exists
ChatGPT Go sits between Free and Plus at $8 a month in the US, and OpenAI says it is available in every country ChatGPT supports. It gives you ten times the free tier’s messages, file uploads and image creation, a longer memory and context window, projects, tasks, custom GPTs and reasoning access. Voice is included at free-tier limits.
The catch: Go still shows ads, and the default model is GPT-5.6 Luna rather than the Sol family. If your use is everyday rather than professional, it is the obvious plan — and it is the one almost nobody writes about.
What the Pro restructure actually did
Confirmed by OpenAI
- Pro 500 launched 29 September 2026 at $500/month, with the highest included usage and the only access to GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast.
- Pro 200 was reopened at $200/month “with adjusted included usage allowances”.
- Grandfathering: users who subscribed between 22 September and 10:00 Pacific on 29 September 2026 keep their previous allowance through 29 October 2026.
- Rate multipliers: Fast mode consumes your allowance at 2.5×; Ultrafast at 8×. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast.
Published message limits
| Plan | GPT-6 Pro (Astra) in Chat | GPT-5.6 Sol Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Pro 200 | 200 messages / week | 170 messages / day, 200 combined daily cap |
| Pro 100 | 50 messages / week (shared) | Shares that 50/week |
| Business Premium | 50 messages / week (shared) | Shares that 50/week |
| Business Standard | 15 messages / month (shared) | Shares that 15/month |
| Plus | Not included | Not included — Plus gets Sol Medium and High only |
| Free / Go | — | “Unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards” |
Worth being clear about, because it is the most common misunderstanding: OpenAI publishes no messages-per-window number for Plus in Chat. The only official statement is that limits “may vary based on system conditions”. If someone quotes you a hard Plus message cap, they are guessing.
The model lineup is split in two, and it confuses everyone
This is the single most useful thing to understand about ChatGPT right now. OpenAI runs two different model sets depending on which part of the product you are in.
| Surface | Models | Who gets them |
|---|---|---|
| Chat (the normal ChatGPT) | GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-5.6 Sol (Instant / Medium / High / Extra High), GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, and GPT-6 Astra shown as “GPT-6 Pro” | Luna is the Free and Go default. Sol Medium/High for Plus. GPT-6 Pro for Pro 100, Pro 200, Business and Enterprise. |
| Work and Codex | GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-5.6 Terra | GPT-6 Sol and Luna arrived 22 Sept; GPT-6.1 Sol on 29 Sept, Pro users first. |
OpenAI says it outright: “GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are models for ChatGPT Work and Codex. They are not available in regular ChatGPT conversations.” So if you are on Plus wondering why you cannot pick GPT-6.1 Sol in the chat box — that is why.
One inconsistency we will note rather than resolve: OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra announcement says Astra “will become available to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users”, while the current help article restricts Astra in Chat to Pro 100, Pro 200, Business and Enterprise, with Plus getting it only inside Work and Codex. OpenAI’s own developer forum has a thread about this. We are reporting the help article, since it is the more recent and more specific document.

Three deadlines to put in your calendar
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 26 October 2026 | Creation of new custom GPTs ends. A GPT must be published before this date to be migrated. |
| 29 October 2026 | Grandfathered Pro allowances expire for subscribers who qualified in the 22–29 September window. |
| 11 December 2026 | Custom GPTs and GPT pages become inaccessible. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral get until 11 February 2027. |
Sora is already gone: the web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026 and the Sora API shut down on 24 September 2026. Exports are at the sunset page, data is deleted after the final export window, and purchased credits can be redirected to other OpenAI services. There is no named replacement.
On the API side, gpt-5.4-cyber shut down on 1 October 2026, and on the same day OpenAI announced shutdowns for gpt-5.3-codex, gpt-5.4-nano and gpt-5.1 (1 April 2027) and for tts-1, tts-1-hd and two gpt-4o-mini-tts snapshots (6 January 2027).
Who sees ads
Straight from OpenAI’s help centre: “Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads.” Ads sit below the end of a response, labelled sponsored, and do not currently appear in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
Testing began in the US on 9 February 2026, expanded to 31 European countries in August, and on 23 September 2026 reached Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan — taking ChatGPT Ads past 60 countries. A week earlier, on 16 September, OpenAI added Sponsored Agents and AI-generated ad creative to its Ads Manager.
Is Plus still the right $20?
Plus is the tier most people are on, and the September changes did not touch its price. What they did change is what sits above and below it. Below, Go at $8 now covers everyday use for a quarter of the price if you can live with ads. Above, the Pro ladder has stretched to $500.
Plus notably still does not include GPT-6 Pro in Chat. If that is what you are paying for, you are looking at $100 a month minimum.
For comparison, and this is the context worth having: ChatLLM by Abacus.AI bundles GPT-6 Astra alongside Claude Opus 5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Grok for $10 a month — half of Plus. It meters you in credits whose rates are not published, which is a real trade-off rather than a free lunch; we wrote that up separately and linked it below. The honest summary is that $20 for a single vendor is no longer the only shape of the market.
Frequently asked questions
How much does ChatGPT cost in 2026?
Free is $0, Go is $8/month, Plus is $20/month, and Pro comes in three tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month. Business is $25/user/month monthly or $20 billed annually; Enterprise is contact-sales only. Pro cannot be billed annually.
What is ChatGPT Pro 500?
A tier launched on 29 September 2026 at $500 a month. It carries the highest included usage and is the only plan with access to GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast, which consumes allowance at 8× the standard rate.
Does ChatGPT Plus include GPT-6?
Not in regular chat. GPT-6 Astra appears in Chat as “GPT-6 Pro” for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Plus users can reach GPT-6 models inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not in the normal conversation model picker.
What is ChatGPT Go and is it worth it?
Go is an $8/month tier giving roughly ten times the free tier’s messages, uploads and image generation, plus longer memory and context, projects, tasks and reasoning access. Ads still appear on Go. For everyday rather than professional use it is the best value tier OpenAI publishes.
When are custom GPTs being retired?
Creation of new custom GPTs ends on 26 October 2026, and custom GPTs and GPT pages become inaccessible on 11 December 2026. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until 11 February 2027. The migration path is to plugins.
Does ChatGPT show ads on paid plans?
No. OpenAI states that ads may appear for Free and Go users, and that Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads.
Is the Sora API still available?
No. The Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026 and the Sora API shut down on 24 September 2026. There is no named replacement; purchased credits can be redirected to other OpenAI services.
What we could not verify
Open questions
- The live rendered figures on chatgpt.com/pricing — the page builds its price table in the browser, so our figures come from OpenAI help articles and launch posts instead.
- ChatGPT Go’s price outside the US. No OpenAI page publishes a non-USD figure.
- The specific Pro 200 allowance cuts (20× to 10×, 200 to 100 messages, the 30 October date, the $2,500 credit). Press-reported only.
- Whether GPT-5.6 Terra is selectable in the Chat model picker. It exists in the API and in Work/Codex allowance tables.
- Enterprise and Edu seat prices — contact-sales only.
- Any overall messages-per-window cap for Plus in Chat. OpenAI does not publish one.
If you are on Pro and have seen your allowance change in practice, tell us what you actually got — first-hand numbers beat a press report.
