Launches get written up. Shutdowns do not, which is unfortunate, because a shutdown is the one that breaks your work. Three of them landed in the last week, and if you have AI video anywhere in a production flow, at least one probably affects you.
The dates that matter
24 September 2026 — the Sora API stopped. OpenAI discontinued it with no successor model named. The Sora web and app experiences had already closed on 26 April 2026.
11 November 2026 — Seedance 1.5 Pro retires. ByteDance is ending it; the replacement is the Seedance 2.x line (2.0 and later, including Seedance 2.5).
Now — export your Sora data. Content can be exported at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, after which OpenAI permanently deletes data associated with Sora use.
Your credits are not lost. Purchased Sora credits remain usable on other OpenAI products such as Codex.
What actually happened to Sora
OpenAI wound Sora down in two stages. The consumer side went first, in April. The API — the part sitting inside other companies’ products — was switched off on 24 September. OpenAI’s support documentation names no replacement video model, which makes this unusual: most deprecations point you at a successor.
The downstream effect was immediate. ElevenLabs removed Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro from its image and video model picker on the same date, told users that generations stop working, and pointed them at Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash instead. Existing generations stay in history; new ones simply fail. If you built a template or an automation around a Sora node, it is broken now, not degraded.
What to move to
| If you were using… | Move to | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sora 2 / Sora 2 Pro via ElevenLabs | Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash | ElevenLabs’ own recommended migration; also now powers 1080p generation in Google Vids |
| Sora API directly | No OpenAI equivalent | You are choosing a new vendor, not upgrading a model — budget test time |
| Seedance 1.5 Pro | Seedance 2.x | Same family, available through BytePlus; migrate before 11 November |
| A general video workflow | A multi-model platform | Tools such as ImagineArt carry many models at once, so a retirement costs you a dropdown change rather than a rebuild |
That last row is the real lesson of the week. Two model retirements in eight days, from two different vendors, one of them with no successor at all. Building directly against a single video model is now a genuine operational risk — not because any one company is unreliable, but because this part of the market is consolidating faster than the tooling around it.
The video model end-of-life calendar
| Date | Model | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 26 April 2026 | Sora (web and app) | Discontinued |
| 24 September 2026 | Sora API | Discontinued — no replacement named |
| 11 November 2026 | Seedance 1.5 Pro | Retired by ByteDance; use the Seedance 2.x models |
| Current | Seedance 2.x | Active — long-form narrative and multi-asset reference generation |
| Current | Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash | Active — the recommended Sora replacement, and now behind Google Vids at 1080p |

Three habits worth adopting
- Write down which models your workflows call. Most people cannot answer this quickly, which is why deprecation notices get missed.
- Export before the window closes. OpenAI is deleting Sora-associated data after the export period. Deprecation usually means “stop generating”; here it also means “lose the archive”.
- Prefer platforms that carry several models. When a model dies, you want to change a setting, not rewrite a pipeline.
The verdict
The generative video market spent 2026 adding models faster than anyone could evaluate them. This month it started subtracting them. Nothing here is a catastrophe — Gemini Omni and the Seedance 2.x models are both capable replacements — but the cost of a retirement lands on whoever built on the old model, and that cost is entirely avoidable with a list of dependencies and a calendar reminder for 11 November.
