At the consumer tier this is not really a price comparison. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro and Perplexity Pro all land within a few dollars of $20 a month. Picking on price is a false economy — pick on what you actually do all day, and on what the subscription bundles besides the model.
The short answer
Research where you need to check the sources: Perplexity. Citations are the product, not a feature.
Long documents, careful writing and code: Claude.
The widest feature set in one subscription: ChatGPT — image generation, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, voice.
You live in Gmail, Docs and Drive: Gemini, because the subscription also buys you 5 TB of storage.
What each one costs
| Plan | Free tier | Main paid tier | Top tier | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes unlimited text chats, limited uploads, images and research | Plus $20/mo Go $8/mo sits below it | Pro from $100/mo | The $8 Go tier is the only sub-$20 paid option of the four. OpenAI states it “may include ads”. |
| Claude | Yes web search, file creation, code execution, up to 5 projects | Pro $17/mo annual $200 up front, or $20 monthly | Max from $100/mo 5x or 20x Pro usage | The annual plan is billed as a single $200 payment rather than monthly instalments. |
| Gemini | Yes Gemini app without a plan | Google AI Pro US$20.99/mo with 5 TB storage when we checked | AI Ultra US$99.99/mo 20 TB, Deep Think | Sold as a Google One plan, not standalone, and priced regionally — check your own country’s page. |
| Perplexity | Yes | Pro $20/mo no annual rate published | Max $200/mo no annual rate published | Routes between models from several vendors rather than running one house model. Its pricing page now shows monthly rates only; the annual discount it used to advertise is no longer published. |

Three things that matter more than the price
1. What else is in the box. Gemini is the odd one out: the subscription is a Google One plan, so the same money buys 5 TB across Drive, Gmail and Photos. If you already pay Google for storage, the AI is close to free. Nobody else bundles anything comparable.
2. Whether you need the sources. Perplexity answers with citations by default and is built around that. The others can search the web, but if your work is “find out and show me where it came from”, that difference compounds daily.
3. The free tiers are genuinely usable now. All four let you do real work without paying. The honest advice is to run the same three tasks through each free tier for a week before you subscribe to anything — the gap between them is much more about temperament and interface than benchmark scores.
Which one for which job
| If your day is mostly… | Try first |
|---|---|
| Fact-finding you have to defend with sources | Perplexity |
| Drafting, editing and reviewing long text | Claude or ChatGPT |
| Writing and debugging code | Claude or ChatGPT |
| Making images alongside the writing | ChatGPT |
| Working inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets | Gemini |
| Connecting an assistant to company data | ChatGPT’s Data agent |
The bottom line
There is no winner here, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The four are close enough in capability that the deciding factors are practical: where your files already live, whether you need citations, and whether you want one subscription to cover images and documents too. Start free, give each one the same week of real work, and only then put $20 a month somewhere. If you are choosing for a team rather than yourself, the bundled storage and admin controls will matter more than any benchmark.
